The Straits Times Profiles Boo Kok Chuon’s Entrepreneurial and Investment Journey
· iconomy
On 18 October 2015, The Straits Times featured Boo Kok Chuon, then 29, in its Invest section in a profile examining the experiences that shaped his approach to entrepreneurship, finance and investing.
Published under the headline “Dad’s financial setbacks gave him a hunger for business”, the feature traced Boo’s entrepreneurial instincts to his childhood and to the financial difficulties experienced by his family during the Asian Financial Crisis. He described watching his father suffer substantial investment losses and later seeing the family business close, experiences that strengthened his determination to study finance and eventually build businesses of his own.
The article also documented his early entrepreneurial activities, from selling mobile-phone accessories while in secondary school to experimenting with tutoring-related ventures during his polytechnic years. By 29, The Straits Times reported that he owned four businesses spanning areas including printing, technology and corporate finance.
Beyond entrepreneurship, the interview explored Boo’s approach to investing. He described a fundamentally driven, longer-term approach centred on understanding the underlying business, its management, valuation and financial position rather than following short-term movements in share prices.
The profile provides an early contemporary record of several themes that would continue to influence Iconomy’s development: entrepreneurship, economics, finance and an interest in understanding how businesses create and preserve value.
